Description

There’s a dead man standing outside the assay office. He’ll wait there until somebody says who put him in the ground. He’s got till dawn. So do you.

The Premise

In the silver town of Saint’s Rest, the murdered dead don’t stay buried. Three nights ago a prospector named Asa Fenn died at the bottom of his own mine shaft; the doctor called it an accident and the marshal jailed a drifter who’d argued with him over cards. Asa disagrees, and he’s been standing outside the assay office every night since, patient and wrong, and the new undertaker is the only soul who can hear what he’s trying to say: it was no accident, the man in the jail didn’t do it, and Asa is not lying back down until somebody living names the true killer out loud. Your players help the undertaker with her difficult clients, and they have one night to hear the dead, work the town, and name the real murderer before the sun comes up and Asa Fenn comes down off that boardwalk to take his justice himself, and the wrong man hangs.

A complete, self-contained weird-western mystery for one session of about three to four hours, ready to run with almost no prep.

What You Get

  • A complete one-shot: the read-aloud opening, the GM-only truth, a full suspect cast, a beat-by-beat night against a dawn clock, the climax, and three true endings.
  • Print-ready player handouts (a hearing of the dead, the assay book that hangs the killer).
  • A GM toolkit for pacing the single session, plus tone anchors and the one rule that makes it a real mystery.

Why It Runs Well at the Table

  • A true, fair-play whodunit: the dead can’t name his killer, so the players investigate the living and earn the truth.
  • Dread and moral weight over gunsmoke: a bullet doesn’t fix it; only naming the wrong, out loud, before dawn, lays the dead to rest.
  • A self-contained night with a hard clock and a gut-punch choice, that also quietly opens a much older mystery.

System-Agnostic

No stat blocks, no rules, no math. Run it in any western-capable or generic system, or rules-light by tension alone. The supernatural is folkloric and offstage-adjacent, with an optional ruleset-neutral GM hook.

Content Note

Mature western themes: murder, frontier lawlessness, a hanging on the line. Dread and moral weight over gore, with violence consequential rather than gratuitous. Includes a safety-tool recommendation up front.

This Is Also a Doorway

Loved the night and want the whole season? This one-shot is the opening of a full campaign. Saint’s Rest: Campaign Codex + GM Kit turns this single case into the first of many and digs up the far older murder the whole town is built on, with the complete codex plus a 5-session Session Planner and a 2-page Campaign Tracker. Find it in the Narrative Hall shop.
